By Aaron Humes: In a statement, the Belize National Trade Union Congress (NTUCB) called for the four major sugar producer associations to unite or collaborate to ensure the benefit of all farmers within these associations.
He also condemned and called for the de-escalation of the violence which marked the start of the sugar season on Monday, December 27.
The statement follows a meeting between Congress and the Belize Sugar Cane Producers Association (BSCFA), the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA), the Sugar Cane Producers Association of the North (NSCGA), the Progressive Association of Sugar Cane Producers (PSCPA), the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB). ) and Belize Sugar Industry / American Sugar Refinery (BSI / ASR) as part of a fact-finding mission to resolve issues in this sector. (The Belize Workers Union (BWU) represents BSI / ASR employees in the sector, but neither association is specifically recognized as a union).
Congress further called for good faith discussions between BSCFA and BSI / ASR for the benefit of all within this sector, for the government to make meaningful interventions on behalf of all cane growers in Belize and generally for peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues which need attention.
