Suspected brown sugar worth Rs 35 lakh seized, detainee

Imphal: Continuing their crackdown on drug trafficking, Manipur police seized a suspected brown sugar weighing more than 1 kg on Churachandpur District and also arrested a related person, Churachandpur SP Shrivanand Surve said on Friday.

Acting on specific charges, a district police team raided the residence of one Seikholen Vaiphei, 42, of Kipgen Veng, Tuibong at around 3pm on Thursday in the presence of an executive magistrate and civilian witnesses.

“During the raid, we found two vehicles, one of which had no registration. During a thorough search of the vehicle, the team recovered 44 cases of soap containing suspected brown sugar weighing 528 grams near the front passenger seat of the vehicle,” Surve said.

During questioning, the person further disclosed that the contraband items had been smuggled from Myanmar.

The team also carried out an extensive search of the vehicles during which police recovered another 56 boxes of soap containing suspected brown sugar weighing 670 grams from the chamber created in the vehicle’s chassis.

The accused was arrested and a case was registered under Section 21(c) of the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act for further investigation.

The market value of the seized contraband items weighing 1,198 grams is worth Rs 35 lakh, the SP said.

Of the recovered contraband, two vehicles and a mobile phone were seized under an appropriate seizure note, he added.
