Rs 3 crore brown sugar seized in one of Odisha’s biggest drug deals

In one of the biggest drug busts ever in Odisha, Puri district police on Saturday seized more than three kilograms of brown sugar worth over Rs three crore from the international drug market.

Acting on a tip, a special police team caught three drug dealers with drug dealing near Mangala Ghat Chowk.

Those arrested ran a drug syndicate and the confiscated brown sugar was top quality. The drug shipment is being sent for laboratory testing, SP Puri Kanwar Vishal Singh said on Saturday.

Sujit Patnaik turned out to be the kingpin of the drug trafficking racket. Those arrested are interrogated to determine the modus operandi of the racketeering. An investigation is still ongoing, he said.

It may be recalled here that the Odisha Police Special Task Force (STF) confiscated five kilograms of brown sugar worth Rs 5 crore in Rasulgarh Chowk on June 19, 2020. This was incidentally the most largest drug seizure ever in the coastal state.

Police sources said the banned substances were heading to Odisha from Murshidabad in West Bengal. Organized rackets of drug traffickers have extended their network to major urban centers – Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Rourkela, Sambalpur and Puri – of the state.
