Poway OnStage opens the season with SUGAR SKULL

Poway OnStage kicks off its 2022/2023 professional performance series with Sugar Skull: A Dia De Muertos Musical Adventure. The show, presented on Saturday, October 8 at 2 p.m., features talented actors, musicians and dancers weaving the melodious story of a clever twelve-year-old and her friend, a charismatic candy skeleton! Sugar Skull! is a joyful, heartfelt and magical adventure that delves into the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos.

“Our audience has been asking for more multi-generational programming, shows suitable for a wide range of ages,” said Sharlene O’Keefe, executive director of Poway OnStage. “Sugar Skull is the perfect manifestation of our commitment to providing shows that the whole family enjoys.”

Sugar Skull is the Mexican musical that asks the question “Why throw a party for the dead?” Vita Flores, 12, thinks her family has gone astray planning a party for their deceased loved ones. But when a fiery candy skeleton suddenly comes to life, Vita finds herself on a magical and musical journey to uncover the true meaning of Día de los Muertos. With her new skeletal friend, Vita dances with ancient ancestors, sings with a sorrowful witch, escapes the trickster Chaneques and meets the famous Catrina Calavera. But can this clever young man piece together the missing pieces needed for his ofrenda family before it’s too late? Joyful and sincere, Sugar Skull is an adventure that delves into the rich and melodious traditions of Día de los Muertos. Party on the Plaza! After the 2:00 p.m. show, Poway OnStage, in partnership with the City of Poway, will host a Fiesta in the Plaza with music, kids’ activities/crafts, and food vendors. The event will take place in the plaza in front of the PCPA, and tickets to Sugar Skull are required to attend.
