Opposition targeting sugar industry, says PM – FBC News

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said it was an election year and it was no surprise that the opposition had once again started kicking the sugarcane industry like a political football.

Responding to comments by NFP leader Prof. Biman Prasad, Bainimarama stressed that there were no dictators on his side of the House.

He said what they have in government is strong and decisive leadership.

The Prime Minister was responding to opposition MP Inosi Kuridrani’s question about the Sugar Ministry’s plan to revive the sugar industry.

Bainimarama adds that the fact is that they continue to provide higher levels of support to sugar cane growers than at any time in Fijian history.

He adds that these include fertilizer and weedkiller subsidies, top-up payments for sugarcane, sugarcane transport payments, lease renewal assistance and improved access roads. at the cane.

However, he admitted there were challenges, adding that when things got tough for sugarcane farmers, the government reached out a firm hand.
