Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley set out a vision for a restructured sugar industry that can maximize its potential to be a bigger engine of the economy.

She said yesterday that she would meet with the industry before the end of the year as now is the time to be strategic in how Barbados moves forward with the industry, acknowledging that “multiple decisions” will need to be made regarding its future.

Among the considerations that should be put on the table, Mottley said, was the transition of the sole sugar factory from a three-month to year-round operation. Barbados could no longer be the underwriter of the sugar industry under circumstances where there were economic and financial opportunities, she added.

She suggested that such opportunities lay in the potential to offer sugar with the distinguished Barbados branding to a global market, as well as “the recognition that our hotels should not use any form of granulated sugar when we have enough. here to supply “that market.” (CG)
