AGRANA successfully concludes the 2021|22 sugar beet processing campaign

  • The volume of sugar production amounts to approximately 850,000 tonnes (including 455,000 tonnes in Austria)
  • CEO Markus Mühleisen: “Beet income for farmers is increasing significantly”

After the end of beet processing at its site in Tulln (Lower Austria) on February 9, AGRANA has successfully completed the 2021|22 beet campaign at its seven beet sugar processing plants in Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic , Slovakia and Romania .

Based on an average processing period of 112 days, 5.7 million tonnes (previous year: 4.8 million tonnes) of sugar beets were processed to produce approximately 850,000 tonnes (previous year: 650,000 tonnes ) sugar. The average yield per hectare, based on a total planted area of 85,700 hectares, was around 67 tonnes, five tonnes more than the previous year.

In Austria, an area of around 37,850 hectares was harvested to produce 455,000 tonnes of sugar – including 16,000 tonnes of organic sugar – from around 3.0 million tonnes of sugar beets (previous year: 2, 1 million tons). The average yield per hectare in Austria rose to 80 tonnes (previous year: 79 tonnes). Last year’s favorable weather conditions had a positive impact on the quality of the sugar beets. A dry and hot month of June was followed by moderate temperatures and frequent rains. Mild September and dry October, along with cooler night temperatures at the start of the harvest season, resulted in a significant increase in sugar content to 17.2% (previous year: 15.4% ). The average sugar content in all AGRANA countries was also 17.2% (previous year: 15.1%).

Markus Mühleisen, CEO of AGRANA: “We are delighted with the excellent sugar beet quality and the positive development in terms of yields per hectare. Our contract farmers also benefit from significantly higher incomes from sugar beets. This is not only due to the higher sugar content, but also due to the increased market price and the higher minimum beet price agreed with the beet growers. Given the favorable market forecast, we call on all farmers who have not yet concluded a contract to take advantage of the option available until March and entrust their beet fields for sowing in the spring.
